What Is a QR Health Card? How It Works and Why It Matters
A QR health card puts your medical history behind one code. How it works, what a doctor sees when they scan it, and how your privacy is protected.
Most of us have a drawer, bag or phone gallery full of medical paperwork: old prescriptions, lab reports, discharge summaries. When you see a new doctor, you either carry the whole pile or try to remember what you were prescribed last time. A QR health card solves that by putting your medical history behind a single code that a doctor can scan.
What is a QR health card?
A QR health card is a personal QR code linked to your digital health record. The code itself doesn't contain your medical history; it points to it. When an authorised doctor, hospital, lab or pharmacy scans it, they can see the records you have chosen to share.
On Vorqard, your QR health card lives in the free patient app. You can show it on your phone, or print it and keep it in your wallet.
What does a doctor see when they scan it?
That depends on what you've added and chosen to share. Typically it includes:
- Allergies and conditions — the information that most affects what a doctor prescribes.
- Current and past medicines — so you don't need to remember brand names.
- Previous prescriptions and diagnoses — from any doctor who uses Vorqard, or that you've uploaded.
- Lab reports — uploaded by the lab directly or added by you.
Instead of spending the first few minutes of a consultation reconstructing your history, the doctor starts with it.
Why it matters in an emergency
In an emergency, the most important facts are simple: blood group, allergies, existing conditions and an emergency contact. Vorqard keeps these in an emergency profile, so the essentials are available quickly when it matters most.
Is a QR health card safe?
Privacy is the first question people ask, and it should be. A well-designed QR health card protects you in three ways:
- The code is a key, not the data. The QR code points to your record; your history isn't printed in it.
- You control access. Doctors see what you choose to share, and you can revoke access from the app.
- You can replace it. If you lose your card or phone, log in on another device and regenerate your QR code.
Your data is also encrypted in transit and at rest. You can read more on our security page.
