Digital Prescriptions: A Practical Guide for Indian Doctors
Why doctors in India are moving to digital prescriptions, what a good e-prescription includes, and how to switch without slowing your OPD.
Handwritten prescriptions have served Indian medicine for generations, but they come with well-known problems: they can be hard to read, easy to lose, and impossible to search. Digital prescriptions fix all three, and with the right tool they don't take longer to write.
Why switch to digital prescriptions?
- Legibility. Pharmacists don't have to guess at a drug name or dose.
- A complete history. Every prescription is saved to the patient's record, so at the next visit you can see exactly what was given and when.
- Fewer repeat questions. When patients share their record, you see what other doctors have prescribed before you prescribe.
- Nothing to lose. Patients can't misplace a prescription that lives on their phone.
What a good digital prescription includes
A digital prescription should contain everything a paper one does, clearly structured:
- Your name, qualifications, registration number and clinic details.
- Patient name, age, sex and date.
- Relevant findings or diagnosis.
- Each medicine with strength, dose, frequency, duration and instructions.
- Advice, investigations ordered and follow-up date.
Always follow the current guidance from the National Medical Commission and your state medical council on prescription format and content.
Won't it slow my OPD down?
It shouldn't. The biggest time saver is the patient's history: when a patient shares their Vorqard QR health card, their allergies, current medicines and past prescriptions are already in front of you. Over a few days, writing digitally becomes as quick as writing by hand, with the advantage that the next visit starts with a complete record.
How to make the switch
- Set up your profile and prescription details once.
- Start with new patients, then move your regular patients over as they return.
- Download the free Vorqard Doctor app, and ask patients to get the free Vorqard Patient app so prescriptions go straight to their record.
- Let local pharmacies know they'll receive clear, digital prescriptions.
Vorqard is free for individual doctors, including digital prescriptions, patient records and appointments. See Vorqard for doctors, or if you run a clinic with several doctors, read about Vorqard for clinics.
